RAM at IU

About

As a member of RAM at IU, you will be given the chance to participate in Remote Area Medical (RAM) trips. These trips are focused on providing free services to those who are unable to afford medical care themselves and for those who do not have access to hospitals or healthcare facilities in their area. Through this organization, members will have the opportunity to volunteer and travel to RAM clinics across the nation. This will be an especially valuable experience to aspiring healthcare professionals. As an organization, we also aspire to attain the resources and manpower necessary to help set up and run our very own clinic here in Indiana in the near future. This organization will aspire to promote quality healthcare both locally and nationally to the fullest of its abilities.

We will have mass meetings every other Monday at 7-8 P.M. in Ernie Pyle Hall 257 (next to IMU), where we will hold advocacy moments about pressing health issues in America and beyond, host guest speakers (e.g. doc talks), organize workshops (e.g. suture clinics), collaborate with other like-minded organizations, commit to service in the community (e.g. volunteering with IRA, SouthernCare, GOAL, etc.), fundraise for the chapter to attend clinics (e.g. Global Dinner), and hold social events.

Exact Meeting Dates Will Be Determined Soon! Stay Tuned, We Are So Excited To See You This Upcoming School Year :)

What is RAM?

Remote Area Medical (RAM) is a major nonprofit provider of free mobile clinics in remote and underserved areas.

During our partnership with RAM when we were formerly known as Hoosier Health Advocates (HHA), we assisted at clinics in Nashville and Cookeville, TN,Ashtabula and Columbus, OH, Saint Charles, IL, and Mayfield, KY where we acted as dental assistants, translators, patient registration technicians, and more. We regularly saw over 1,000 patients during our work on clinic days. Additionally, we work with RAM headquarters to gain insights into the behind-the-scenes operations of a major nonprofit.

For our members, each and every RAM trip cemented to us the importance of accessible healthcare. These clinics aren't just about "treating physical ailments", but also creating a "haven of hope" for our patients. This is what inspired to us to create a dedicated RAM chapter here at IU - we want more folks to experience this opportunity.

We do more than just RAM trips - in Bloomington itself, we encourage youth to lead healthy lives at local elementary schools through IU Health's G.O.A.L. program and engage in a variety of other community service activities, including volunteering with the Indiana Recovery Alliance, Shalom Community Center, and SouthernCare Hospice.

As you can see, we like to keep ourselves busy! Being a member is like being part of a family. We strive to foster well-informed student leaders that will ultimately take what they learn to ultimately better the world around us. All we ask of our members is to stay involved and engaged as best as they can.
